Konda Kae Thomas, 58, died Saturday, September 15 at home following the Mizzou-Purdue game. She enriched the lives of a generation of Hamilton Southeastern High School students during the school year, reveled in lake life over the summer, and built a life together with her adoring husband of 27 years, Kevin Clarence Thomas in Fishers, IN. Raising two truly amazing humans, Julianne Marie of Estes Park, CO and Lauren Elizabeth of Bloomington, IN. Konda leaves a legacy of love and compassion embodied by them.
Konda was born in Peoria, IL on September 19, 1959, to Helen and Dallas Oberlander. Â She attended University of Missouri-Columbia where she received her BS in Industrial Engineering in 1981, worked at General Motors Delco-Remy plant in Anderson before moving to Fishers and working at Rexnord Corporation. Â Due to her passion for helping students, she chose to transition into K-12 education and received her Master of Social Work from IUPUI in 2002. She was preceded in death by her sister Kandi Oberlander.
Konda created stunning quilts and frequented independent quilt shops throughout the U.S. for specialty fabrics to add to her impressive stash. She cheered the Chicago Cubs as God intended. She baked cinnamon rolls and breads to share with her friends, whose kindness and generosity so greatly enhanced her life.
Join us in celebrating the life of Konda Thomas at Christ the Savior Lutheran Church, 10500 E. 126th St., Fishers, IN. Visitation is Thursday, September 20, from 5–8 pm. The Funeral will be Friday September 21, 4:30 pm.
Gifts in memoriam may be made to Christ the Savior Lutheran Church or to the charity of your choice.

We are so sorry for the loss of Konda’s shining spirit. We knew Konda and of her sisters from Washington grade school in Peoria, IL and are just discovering the news. We were in Girl Scouts together! We were happy to have connected a few years ago on Facebook. We are incredibly sad. It is doubly sad that Kandi has also passed. We are glad she was always well-loved and made us laugh. Best wishes to this beautiful family.

Konda was my friend in grade school and I never forgot her. She moved away after I had known her only a few years but her sassy spirit and unique name (and her sisters’ names) left a memory that lasted to this day. She and I would have cheered the Cubs, baked, compared sewing ideas, and shared teaching anecdotes if we had been able to reunite. Love to her family.
